The street name King George V dates to the time of the British Mandate period in Palestine. It is believed to have been named for King George V of the United Kingdom, who ruled from 1910 to 1936. During this period, the British influeneced the politics, culture and infrastructure of the region; hence the street was named in honor of the British monarch. Today, the street is an important thoroughfare in the western part of Jerusalem.
