Shamai was named after the first high priest of Jerusalem in the 10th century BC, who was also a prophet. The name was retained after the Babylonian Exile and had been used throughout Jerusalem's history to denote Jewish residences, businesses, and holy sites. The area is also known for hosting many important events and locations mentioned in the Bible.
